More room for plants!

We spent most of the day today at Mum’s house, cutting out new flowerbeds for her. She had already made a start but wasn’t able to lift the turf out so we said we’d take care of the heavier work. The topsoil is reassuringly dark, almost black, and loamy, so I think everything should do well.

So now she has a lot less lawn and a lot more area to plant, and the shapes are interesting too.

So much better than a rectangle of grass.

She has started planting some of the plants we bought last Saturday:

Buddleia (in the back corner) and camellia (next to the daffodils).

Rhubarb looking good, and the loganberry and gooseberry not quite getting going yet.

A few things have gone into the front garden too, not just some of the shrubs that we bought but also some transplanted snowdrops:

The greenhouse and raised beds look like they’ve always been there, and the plants waiting to go out are happily in the greenhouse for now:

The hellebores are still flowering away like mad, much to Mum’s delight as she has never had any luck with hellebores in the past. Daffodils are doing well too, including a lovely clump of small ones (ours have yet to flower).

So all in all a good day. Tomorrow we’re going to get some more done in our garden, plus a quick visit to Mum to take her some compost and pick up the last of the paving slabs.
