Today’s harvest

Small, but respectable!

raspberries 12th jul 2016

We’re getting about this many every couple of days, and I’m putting them straight in the freezer so we’re gradually building up the quantities. The gooseberries are getting there too but aren’t quite ripe enough to pick yet.

Yes, here in North eastern PA we are also getting a smaller raspberry harvest. Just enough to have a cereal bowl full with milk and sugar. (The way Grandma served us berries).

We’ve had more this year than before – we just thought ahead and decided to freeze them as they ripen so we’ll have enough to do something. Last year we were eating a few every couple of days with a bit of ice cream but we didn’t get an impression of how many we had, if you see what I mean!

We had a raspberry bush pop up right in the middle of our front yard landscape. It’s pretty big but I read we probably wont get any fruit the first year. No flowers, no fruit. I can’t wait until I can start harvesting home grown rather than picking at the orchard. Congratulations on yours, they are beautiful.

Ours took a year or so to get going – nothing the first year, then since then we’ve had a few more each year. The gooseberries have been the same. And raspberry bushes are quite invasive so keep an eye on it!

We’re hoping to transplant it this fall to a more appropriate location where it can flourish to its hearts content.
